The 1979 Susan B. Anthony dollar coin exists in two main varieties: the Narrow Rim (“Far Date”) and the Wide Rim (“Near Date”).

Here’s how to identify the “Wide Rim” or “Near Date” variety:

  • Examine the space between the date (“1979”) and the rim of the coin.
  • On the Wide Rim variety, the date is positioned closer to the rim, and the ‘1’ in “1979” almost touches the rim.
  • The rim itself also appears visibly thicker.
  • Conversely, on the Narrow Rim variety, there’s a wider gap between the date and the rim.
  • Important Note: The Wide Rim variety only occurs on coins minted in Philadelphia, designated by the “P” mint mark. Coins from Denver (“D”) and San Francisco (“S”) do not have this variety.

| Variety | Grade | Estimated Value |
|—|—|—|
| Narrow Rim (Far Date) | MS63 | ~$5 |
| Narrow Rim (Far Date) | MS67 | ~$165 |
| Wide Rim (Near Date) | MS63 | ~$25 |
| Wide Rim (Near Date) | MS67 | Up to $1,000+ |

  • Certification: Having the coin professionally graded by a reputable third party can add value and confidence in its authenticity and condition.

In conclusion

While common 1979 Susan B. Anthony dollars hold face value, the scarce Wide Rim variety can be worth a significant premium, especially in higher grades. It’s important to be able to distinguish between the two varieties to accurately assess the coin’s potential value.
