President Alma Coin is ultimately viewed as a flawed and morally ambiguous leader in The Hunger Games due to several actions that suggest ruthlessness, a thirst for power, and a lack of true compassion, [according to Near Pure Evil Wiki].

Here are some of the key reasons she is considered “bad”:

  • Manipulative Tactics: Coin is depicted as a master manipulator, using people like Katniss and the rebellion for her own political gain rather than truly believing in their cause, [according to Near Pure Evil Wiki].
  • Hypocrisy and Ruthlessness: While claiming to fight against the Capitol’s tyranny, Coin’s actions mirror Snow’s cruelty. She plans to reinstate the Hunger Games, though with Capitol children instead of those from the districts, demonstrating a willingness to use similar barbaric methods.
  • Willingness to Sacrifice Lives: Coin shows a disregard for human life when it comes to achieving her goals. This is evident in her willingness to send soldiers to their deaths and in her potential role in the bombing that killed Primrose Everdeen and other civilians during the rebellion.
  • Power Hunger: As the rebellion progresses, Coin becomes increasingly focused on consolidating her own power and less passionate about liberating Panem. [According to Villains Wiki] , she postpones elections, positioning herself as a dictator.
  • Cruel Actions: Examples like her treatment of Katniss’ prep team, held hostage and subjected to harsh punishments, illustrate her cruelty and lack of empathy, [according to Near Pure Evil Wiki].

In essence, while Coin presents herself as a revolutionary leader fighting for freedom, her actions reveal a darker side driven by ambition and a willingness to use similar oppressive tactics as those she claims to fight against. This ultimately leads Katniss to recognize Coin’s dangerous nature and choose to assassinate her, believing she would be no better than Snow as the leader of Panem.

Why did Snow laugh when Katniss killed Coin?

Thanks for asking. Katniss believed in the value of all human lives. Snow knew he was dying and made sure Katniss understood how ruthless Coin was in her goals and so when she shot Coin, he laughed because he knew he had convinced Katniss that Coin wasn’t a good leader either, and that Katniss saw a third option for the future.

Thanks for asking. He believed Coin saw Katniss as a threat to her power, particularly with a free election approaching post-war. Boggs also suspected Coin sent Peeta to eliminate Katniss, given his uncontrollable state.

From my experience, Coin wants to remain in power after the revolution, and if Katniss isn’t going to support Coin’s leadership, then Coin will use her in whatever way she can to give the rebellion momentum. For now, that might mean turning Katniss into a martyr. For everyone’s safety, the crew sets up an around-the-clock guard on Peeta.
