Why is President Coin Evil? 4 Key Reasons Revealed

In The Hunger Games series, President Alma Coin is presented as a ruthless and power-hungry figure, leading some to consider her evil . While initially appearing as a champion for the rebellion against the Capitol, her actions reveal a darker side driven by a desire for control rather than true liberation.

Here are some of the key reasons why President Coin is considered to be evil:

  • Manipulative Tactics: Coin uses deception and manipulation to achieve her goals, similar to President Snow. She strategically places people, including Katniss, on a “chessboard” to gain political advantage. She orchestrates events, such as the City Circle bombing, [clearing the way for her to become the interim President of Panem].
  • Willingness to Sacrifice Lives: Coin is shown to be willing to sacrifice innocent lives to achieve her objectives, including using Capitol children as human shields and bombing her own Medical Corps during the rebellion.
  • Disregard for Katniss’s Well-being: Coin views Katniss as a pawn in her schemes and is willing to let her die once she has served her purpose as the Mockingjay, [seeing her as a potential threat to her power] . This is evidenced by her deliberately placing Peeta, who was brainwashed to kill Katniss, on a mission with her, according to the Villains Wiki.
  • Hypocrisy and Desire for Continued Oppression: Coin’s most significant revelation of evilness comes when she proposes a final Hunger Games involving Capitol children. This reveals her hypocrisy, as she had criticized Snow’s tyrannical rule and the Hunger Games, yet ultimately sought to continue a similar form of oppression, albeit targeting different people.

Ultimately, Katniss recognizes that Coin is just as dangerous as Snow, if not more so, because she’s a more subtle and patient manipulator. This understanding, coupled with the realization of Coin’s role in Prim’s death, leads Katniss to assassinate Coin instead of Snow.

Why did Snow laugh when Katniss killed Coin?

Thanks for asking. Katniss believed in the value of all human lives. Snow knew he was dying and made sure Katniss understood how ruthless Coin was in her goals and so when she shot Coin, he laughed because he knew he had convinced Katniss that Coin wasn’t a good leader either, and that Katniss saw a third option for the future.

President Coin’s manipulative tactics enabled her to take power in Panem, but she was even worse than President Snow.

From my experience, President Coriolanus Snow is the main antagonist of The Hunger Games franchise. He is the tyrannical president of Panem (North America after the apocalypse) and the archenemy of Katniss Everdeen.
