The person featured on the obverse (heads) side of the U.S. nickel is Thomas Jefferson , the third President of the United States.

It’s important to note that the design of the nickel has undergone changes over the years. While Thomas Jefferson has been consistently featured on the obverse since 1938, the specific image of Jefferson has been updated. Currently, the nickel shows a forward-facing likeness of Thomas Jefferson based on a Rembrandt Peale portrait from 1800.

For a brief period in 2004 and 2005, a series of commemorative nickels (the Westward Journey Nickel Series) featured different designs celebrating the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. However, the design reverted to showcasing Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and his home, Monticello, on the reverse in 2006.

The obverse (heads) shows an image of Thomas Jefferson based on a Rembrandt Peale portrait. The image of Monticello on the reverse (tails) is a more detailed depiction of the design used from 1938 to 2003. The first five-cent coin made by the U.S.
