The United States Mint continues to produce various types of dollar coins . However, the production of dollar coins specifically for general circulation was suspended in 2011.
Since 2012, dollar coins have primarily been minted for collectors. These include the Native American and American Innovation dollar series, which the US Mint still considers circulating coins, despite being produced mainly for collectible sets due to large stockpiles from previous productions.
Historically, Morgan Dollars were minted from 1878 to 1904, and again for a single year in 1921. Following this, the Peace Dollar replaced the Morgan Dollar and was struck between 1921 and 1928, and again in 1934-1935. Eisenhower Dollars were minted from 1971-1978 and were the first circulating dollar coin to feature the portrait of a US President.
The Susan B. Anthony Dollar was minted from 1979 to 1981 and again in 1999. After this, the Sacagawea Dollar was introduced in 2000. In 2007, the Presidential Dollar Coin Program began, issuing dollar coins honoring deceased former presidents. This program ran until 2016, with a final coin honoring George H.W. Bush released in 2020.
In addition to these, special commemorative dollar coins and bullion coins like the American Silver Eagle are also produced, though not for general circulation.
In 2021, to mark the centennial of the end of the Morgan Dollar series and the start of the Peace Dollar series, the US Mint resumed striking special versions of these dollars. The Mint also intends to continue minting these anniversary editions in the coming years.
Are $1 coins still being made?
Thanks for asking. Four new $1 coins with distinctive reverse designs will be released each year from 2019 through 2032 in the order the states ratified the Constitution of the United States or were admitted to the Union.
Why is the 2005 $1 coin rare?
From my experience, Struck by mistake in 2006 and issued in the 2006 proof set, the coin is rare because the official proof dollar minted in 2005 had a completely different design, thus making the 2005 proof dollar with the kangaroo design extremely rare.
