The most recent Super Bowl (Super Bowl LIX, played in February 2025) featured a coin toss that landed on tails.

The Kansas City Chiefs, designated as the visiting team for Super Bowl LIX, made the call and correctly chose tails. They deferred possession to the Philadelphia Eagles, who received the opening kickoff.

  • Across all Super Bowls, the coin toss has landed on tails slightly more often than heads: tails has occurred 31 times (52%) and heads 28 times (47%).
  • There’s no definitive pattern in terms of which side wins the toss; each side has had streaks of winning and losing.
  • Interestingly, the Kansas City Chiefs won the coin toss in both Super Bowl LVII and LVIII, and went on to win the game in both instances.

Here are the results of the Super Bowl coin toss for the last 10 years:

The coin toss is a symbolic start to the game, and while it determines initial possession, studies have shown it doesn’t significantly influence the outcome of the Super Bowl.

That meant they got to call the toss on Sunday. And they were correct with Chris Jones’ choice of tails. The Chiefs won the toss and opted to defer for those of you who might have an interest in these things.

Great question! Since the Chiefs are technically the visiting team in this year’s Super Bowl, they called the toss between them and the Eagles and ended up winning after calling tails.

Kansas City won the coin toss for SB 59 after correctly calling tails. The Chiefs deferred to the second half, at which point the team was trailing 34-0. The Chiefs also won the coin toss last year when it landed on heads.

Diaconis et al. showed that flipping a coin in a certain fairly natural way resulted in 51% coming up the same side as it started and 49% changing. So if you have a coin showing tails and you flip it, it comes up tails 51% of the time. But if it shows heads and you flip it, it comes up heads 51% of…
