The oldest known coin is believed to be the Lydian Lion , originating from the ancient Kingdom of Lydia (modern-day Turkey) around 600 BCE.

Here’s why the Lydian Lion holds this distinction and some of its key features:

  • Invention of Coinage: Lydia is widely credited with the invention of coinage as a standardized medium of exchange, revolutionizing trade from a barter system.
  • Material: These early coins were crafted from electrum , a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver found in the Pactolus River in Lydia. Electrum’s inherent hardness and durability made it suitable for coinage at a time when refining pure gold was less common.
  • Design: The Lydian Lion coins typically feature a roaring lion’s head on the front (obverse), symbolizing the power and strength of the Lydian kings. The reverse side usually bears a simple, irregular punch mark.
  • Value: The Lydian Lion, particularly the larger denominations like the stater (weighing around 14.1 grams), likely held considerable value, potentially equivalent to a soldier’s monthly pay.

The Lydian Lion’s invention marked a pivotal moment in economic history, paving the way for the development of currency systems across the ancient world and laying the groundwork for modern financial systems.

Thanks for asking. However, Lydian staters are widely considered to be the world’s oldest coins. They are made from electrum, a mixture of gold and silver. These early coins were minted around 600 BCE in the kingdom of Lydia in the modern-day country of Turkey.

Thanks for asking. 1943 Bronze Lincoln Penny. Now we’re getting into some serious money. The 1943 Bronze Lincoln penny has gone for hundreds of thousands of dollars, but it could go for as much as $1 million in perfect shape, according to Urban Aunty — as long as it’s missing a mint mark (and thus from Philadelphia).
