A mule coin is a type of minting error where a coin is struck using an obverse (front) die and a reverse (back) die that were not intended to be paired together. This creates a coin with mismatched designs on its two sides. The name “mule” comes from the hybrid animal, which is the offspring of a horse and a donkey, symbolizing the two different designs combined on one coin.

Mule coins are created by human error during the minting process when the wrong dies are installed in the coining press. For example, the obverse die of one coin type might be mistakenly paired with the reverse die of a different coin type. This can happen with both government-produced coins and privately minted rounds.

  • 2000 Sacagawea Dollar – Washington Quarter Mule: This coin features the obverse (front) of a Washington quarter and the reverse (back) of a Sacagawea dollar.
  • 2014 Britannia-Lunar Horse Mule Coins: The British Royal Mint accidentally mixed up the obverse dies for these two coins, resulting in thousands of each coin being struck with the incorrect obverse design.
  • 2001-D Lincoln Cent Mule: This coin has a Lincoln cent obverse paired with a Roosevelt dime reverse.

Mule coins are generally considered rare due to the nature of the error and the fact that most are recovered and destroyed before reaching circulation. However, some mule coins can be quite valuable to collectors, depending on their rarity and condition . For example, the 2000 Sacagawea dollar – Washington quarter mule can sell for between $100,000 and $125,000 . In contrast, the 2014 Britannia-Lunar Horse mule coins, while a notable error, are not as valuable because tens of thousands entered circulation.

To determine if you have a mule coin, carefully examine both sides of the coin and compare the designs to a coin catalog or reliable source to see if the designs are mismatched. It’s also important to note that mule coins are typically not misshapen or heavily damaged, unlike some other minting errors. If you suspect you have a mule coin, it is recommended to have it authenticated by a reputable coin dealer or grading service.

Great question! Nemtsas said the four-figure sum for the 2000 $1 mule is usually reserved for those in immaculate condition. Circulated versions of this coin can fetch $200-$300.

Thanks for asking. Mule coins are typically rare because they are the result of minting errors. This rarity can make them highly valuable to collectors, especially if the error is discovered before many such coins are released into circulation.
