The term “Widow’s Mite” refers to a small, low-denomination ancient coin used in Judea during the time of Jesus. It’s most famously known from a story in the New Testament (Mark 12:41-44 and Luke 21:1-4), where Jesus observes a poor widow donating two such coins to the temple treasury.

Here’s a breakdown of what a Widow’s Mite coin represents:

  • Historical Context: These coins are typically identified as lepta (singular: lepton) , the smallest denomination of currency in circulation in Judea at the time. They were primarily bronze coins minted during the reign of King Alexander Jannaeus (103 to 76 BCE), well before Jesus’ lifetime, but they remained in circulation during the first century AD.
  • Design and Composition: Lepta were small, about 15mm in diameter, and often featured simple designs like an anchor or an eight-pointed star. These designs reflected the era’s reliance on maritime trade and the cultural symbols of the Hasmonean kingdom.
  • Value: In ancient times, lepta had very little purchasing power. Some estimate their value to be around 1/5 of a penny, enough to purchase perhaps one or two grapes. The two lepta the widow gave, while monetarily insignificant, represented her entire livelihood.
  • Significance: The story of the Widow’s Mite highlights Jesus’ message about true generosity and sacrifice . He emphasizes that the value of a gift lies not in its material worth, but in the spirit and sacrifice with which it is given. The widow, despite her poverty, gave all she had, while richer individuals gave only a portion of their abundance.

In essence, the Widow’s Mite coin, though small and seemingly insignificant in monetary terms, has come to symbolize faith, humility, and sacrificial giving within Christianity and beyond. It reminds us that God values a giving heart more than the size of the offering itself.
