A military challenge coin is a small, custom-designed medallion that represents a soldier’s affiliation with a specific unit, command, or a special achievement . Receiving a challenge coin is considered a significant honor within the military, symbolizing recognition, camaraderie, and belonging.

The exact origin of challenge coins is debated, but they are believed to have started in the military, with the most popular theory tracing them back to World War I. The story goes that an American pilot, shot down and captured, was able to prove his identity to French soldiers, avoiding execution, by showing them a bronze medallion featuring his squadron’s emblem. This experience is said to have sparked the tradition of soldiers carrying these coins as a form of identification and a symbol of unit pride.

  • Commemoration: Challenge coins commemorate deployments, missions, significant events, or anniversaries.
  • Recognition: They are awarded to personnel for exceptional achievements, outstanding service, or going above and beyond the call of duty.
  • Team Building: Carrying a challenge coin fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie, representing membership in a specific unit or team, strengthening bonds within a group.
  • Tradition and Pride: Coins symbolize pride in one’s service and are treasured mementos of military experiences.
  • The “Challenge”: A fun, informal tradition, the “coin challenge” involves a group displaying their coins, and whoever is last or unable to produce one typically buys a round of drinks or performs a lighthearted task.

Today, challenge coins are used across all branches of the US military, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. They are also used by other organizations like police departments, fire departments, and even businesses and academic institutions to recognize achievements, build camaraderie, and promote esprit de corps. Challenge coins are often customized with the organization’s insignia, motto, dates, and other relevant imagery, making each coin a unique representation of its associated group or event.

From my experience, A challenge coin is often given to commemorate exceptional actions and recognize someone who has gone above and beyond expectations. While it’s not typically considered a traditional “award” in the sense of a trophy or medal, it holds deep significance, especially in the military.

Good point! In general, most common military challenge coins are worth between $5 and $50, especially those sold for morale or promotional purposes. However, rare coins associated with elite units or historical moments can fetch hundreds—or even thousands—of dollars on the secondary market.

While they originated in the military, anyone can own or receive a challenge coin. Many organizations use them to recognize outstanding achievements, celebrate milestones, or foster a sense of unity. For example, the Boy Scouts of America award Eagle Scouts with challenge coins to honor their dedication and success.
