John F. Kennedy is featured on the United States half dollar coin. The coin was first minted in 1964 as a memorial to the assassinated president.

Here are some details about the Kennedy Half Dollar:

  • Obverse (Heads Side): Depicts a profile of President John F. Kennedy, [based on a portrait prepared for his presidential medal].
  • Reverse (Tails Side): Shows the Presidential Seal, which includes a heraldic eagle with a shield, an olive branch, arrows, and 50 stars representing the states.
  • History: It replaced the Franklin Half Dollar and was initially minted with 90% silver in 1964. The silver content was reduced to 40% from 1965 to 1970, and then eliminated entirely from 1971 onward, except for special commemorative issues. From 1975 to 1976, a special Bicentennial design featuring Independence Hall replaced the Presidential Seal on the reverse.
  • Circulation: While initially experiencing high demand and hoarding due to its connection to the popular president, the Kennedy Half Dollar eventually saw limited use in everyday transactions. Production for general circulation was halted in 2001 and resumed in 2021.
  • Collectibility: The Kennedy Half Dollar is popular with collectors, especially the 1964 and some error varieties. Collectors also seek out special issues, like those included in annual sets and commemorative releases.

From my experience, The obverse (heads) shows an image of Kennedy based on a portrait prepared for his presidential medal. The Presidential Seal appears on the reverse (tails). The Mint made the first half dollar in 1794 of silver. The designs from 1794 to 1947 showed a woman symbolizing liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse.
