Of the commonly circulated coins in the United States, the Half Dollar is the thickest, measuring 2.15 mm (0.085 inches).

For context, here’s a comparison of the thicknesses of other common US coins:

  • Nickel: 1.95 mm (0.077 in)
  • Quarter: 1.75 mm (0.069 in)
  • Penny: 1.52 mm (0.060 in)
  • Dime: 1.35 mm (0.053 in)

It’s interesting to note that despite being smaller in diameter than the Quarter, the Nickel is thicker. Historically, the Nickel was thickened to address concerns about it being easily lost.

Good point! Size (from smallest to largest) is dime, penny, nickel, and quarter. Nickels are the thickest of the 4 coins. Dimes are the thinnest of the 4 coins. Dimes and quarters have ridged edges.

Great question! And the nickels will have the highest density because they are the thickest, but I think it will be close with the quarters because they are the largest length wise. The mass: The mass of five pennies was 12.5 grams, then divided by each 12.5/5, so each penny had the mass of 2.5 grams.
