The formal name for a coin collector is a numismatist.

  • Numismatics: This term refers to the study or collection of currency, including coins, tokens, paper money, and related objects like medals.
  • Numismatist: This is the individual who engages in the study and/or collection of numismatic items.

While “coin collector” is a perfectly acceptable and commonly understood term, particularly for those who pursue the hobby casually, “numismatist” is a more precise and encompassing term, reflecting a deeper interest in the historical, social, and artistic aspects of currency, not just the act of acquisition. [The U.S. Mint Coin Classroom (.gov)] notes that the term numismatist (“noo-miz-ma-tist”) refers to a person who collects coins.

In essence, while all numismatists are coin collectors, not all coin collectors are necessarily numismatists in the broader sense of the term.

I can help with that. Other forms: numismatists. The person who looks closely at every penny might not be cheap — he might be a numismatist, a coin collector, looking for old or rare coins that somehow got into the mix.

The name that we give to the collection of coins today is numismatics, a word that also encompasses the collection of paper money and of medals.

Fun Fact! A person who collects coins is called a numismatist (“noo-miz-ma-tist”). Numismatics (“noo-miz-ma-ticks”) is the study and collecting of things that are used as money, including coins, tokens, and paper bills.
