The Saint Benedict Medal (often referred to as a “coin” because of its shape) is a Catholic sacramental medal that holds significance for its association with Saint Benedict of Nursia and for its reputed power against evil . It is used by Roman Catholics, as well as Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists, and Western Orthodox Christians.

Here’s a breakdown of the key elements and significance of the St. Benedict Medal:

  • Front: The front features an image of St. Benedict holding a cross in one hand and his Rule for Monasteries in the other. It may also depict a poisoned cup (referring to an attempt on his life where a poisoned drink shattered when he blessed it) and a raven carrying a poisoned loaf of bread (another foiled assassination attempt).
  • Reverse: The reverse side features a cross, encircled by Latin initials representing prayers and a formula of exorcism.

– Crux sacra sit mihi lux! Non draco sit mihi dux! (May the holy cross be my light! May the dragon never be my guide!)
– Vade retro Satana! Nunquam suade mihi vana! Sunt mala quae libas. Ipse venena bibas! (Begone Satan! Never tempt me with your vanities! What you offer me is evil. Drink the poison yourself!)
– The word “PAX” (peace) is often found above the cross.

  • The medal is one of the oldest and most honored medals in Christian use.
  • While the exact origin is unknown, it’s believed to have originated in the 11th century, possibly initially in the form of a cross used by Pope Leo IX.
  • The medal, as it is known today, is the Jubilee medal, first struck in 1880 to commemorate the 1400th anniversary of St. Benedict’s birth.
  • Protection against evil: The medal is widely believed to be a powerful sacramental against evil. It is sometimes referred to as the “devil-chasing medal”. It is used in exorcisms by priests.
  • Protection against various dangers: Beyond spiritual warfare, it’s believed to offer protection against disease, poisoning, storms, and childbirth complications.
  • Spiritual benefits: Pious use of the medal is associated with obtaining the conversion of sinners, assistance for a happy death, and strength in preserving purity.
  • Practical Uses: The medal can be worn on a chain, attached to a rosary, carried in a wallet or purse, placed in vehicles or homes, and even put in the foundations of buildings.
  • While not strictly required, it’s highly recommended that a St. Benedict Medal be blessed by a priest before use. This blessing attaches God’s grace to it, enhancing its spiritual significance and effectiveness.

In summary, the St. Benedict Medal is a powerful sacramental, revered for its symbolism, associated with prayers of exorcism, and used as a means of seeking divine protection and intercession through the merits of Saint Benedict.

It symbolizes how prayer creates peace within ourselves and in our communities. Those who carry the St. Benedict medallion with them reject all evil and provide encouragement as we walk along God’s path, with the Gospel as our guide and Him as our light.

To use the Saint Benedict Medal, simply hold it in your hand and say a prayer asking for Saint Benedict’s intercession. You can also place the medal in a strategic location in your house, such as near the front door, to ward off evil.
