The size of a 1 oz gold coin can vary slightly depending on the specific coin and the issuing mint. However, they generally fall within a similar range of dimensions. For instance:

  • The 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin has a diameter of 32.7 mm and a thickness of 2.87 mm.
  • The 1 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin typically has a diameter of 30.0 mm and a thickness of 2.87 mm.
  • The 1 oz American Buffalo coin has a diameter of 32.7 mm and a thickness of 2.95 mm.
  • Other 1 oz gold coins, like the Austrian Philharmonic , might have a diameter of 37 mm.

In general, 1 oz gold coins are roughly as thick as two dimes stacked together and slightly wider than a quarter. These slight variations are often difficult to discern with the naked eye.

Thanks for asking. The 1/10-ounce Eagle Gold Bullion Coin is approximately the size of a dime. The smallest of the gold eagles, it contains the same 22-karat gold as the larger coins.

Is it better to buy 1 oz gold bar or coin?

From my experience, For large investors purchasing in bulk, gold bars are a better value as they have lower premiums above the spot price. But if you want to add gold incrementally over time, gold coins offer the convenience of purchasing in small amounts and thus are more suitable for new investors.
