The value of a Roosevelt dime (1946-present) depends on several factors, including:

  • Date and mintmark: Some years and mintmarks are rarer and more valuable than others.
  • Condition: Coins in better condition (higher grade) generally fetch higher prices.
  • Errors and Varieties: Coins with mint errors (e.g., doubled die, off-center strikes, missing clad layers) or known varieties can be significantly more valuable.
  • Silver Content: Roosevelt dimes minted between 1946 and 1964 are 90% silver and have a base value tied to the current silver price.
  • Proof vs. Business Strikes: Proof coins, minted for collectors with a higher quality strike, often command higher values than regular circulation strikes.

Some of the most valuable Roosevelt dimes include:

  • 1982 P No Mint Mark (Strong Strike): Missing the “P” mintmark and a strong, separate rim, these can fetch around $45 in very fine condition. A 1982 P No Mint Mark Strong strike graded Mint State 67 has been listed for $1575.
  • [1964 D Doubled Die Reverse]: Worth $25 in very fine condition.
  • 1950 S: Can be worth $40 – $70 in mint state condition.
  • 1949 S: Can be worth $50 – $80 in mint state condition.
  • Circulated examples (G-VG, F-VF, EF-AU): Generally valued from $2 – $3. However, even worn silver dimes are worth more than face value due to their silver content, roughly $2.75 based on recent silver prices.
  • Mint State examples: Typically range from $3 – $10, depending on the specific year and mintmark.
  • Proof examples (1950-1964): Start around $4 and can go much higher depending on the specific year and condition, with some exceeding $1000.
  • Error coins can be significantly more valuable than regular strikes.
  • A 1965 Roosevelt dime struck on a silver planchet (wrong metal) sold for $14,400.
  • A 1988-D Roosevelt Dime Error coin was recently listed for $500.
  • A 1973-D Roosevelt Dime with multiple errors has been listed for $1000.
  • A 1967 Roosevelt Dime with errors on both the reverse and obverse was listed for $2499.
  • A 2005-P Roosevelt Dime with rare cud rim errors was listed for $1200.

In conclusion, the value of a Roosevelt dime can vary greatly depending on its specific characteristics and condition. It’s recommended to consult a coin price guide or a professional numismatist for a precise valuation of a specific coin.
