Prestige coin sets, produced by the U.S. Mint, typically include proof versions of regular issue coins (cent, nickel, dime, quarter, and half dollar) alongside one or more commemorative coins from the same year. These sets were issued between 1983 and 1997, with no set issued in 1985. Their value can fluctuate based on several factors, including:

  • Rarity: Sets with lower mintages, like the 1996 Prestige set (with 55,000 sets minted), tend to be more valuable.
  • Condition: Coins in excellent, uncirculated condition, ideally with original government packaging (OGP) and Certificate of Authenticity (COA), fetch higher prices.
  • Historical significance: Sets tied to important events or anniversaries can be more desirable.
  • Market trends and demand: Popularity and demand for specific sets or the commemorative coins within them can impact their value.

Based on recent sales and listings, the values of individual Prestige Sets can vary significantly:

  • [1996 Prestige Proof Set]: This set, which includes the Olympic Proof half dollar and Silver dollar, is often listed at higher prices due to its lower mintage. Recent prices range from $163 to $685.
  • [1987 Prestige Proof Set]: Celebrating the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution, this set can be found for around $45 to $60.
  • [1991 Mount Rushmore Prestige Proof Set]: This set, including a silver dollar and half dollar, is listed at around $95.
  • Complete Sets (1983-1997): A complete collection of all 14 Prestige Proof sets (no set in 1985) containing 92 coins can range from $990 to over $1,700.

  • Individual Coin Value: Sometimes, the individual coins within a Prestige Set, especially the silver commemorative dollars and half dollars, may be worth more when sold separately due to their intrinsic metal value or specific errors.
  • Packaging Condition: The condition of the original packaging, including the box and COA, plays a crucial role in determining a set’s value.
  • Grading: Professional grading services can provide an official assessment of a coin’s condition and help establish its value.

Disclaimer: Coin values can fluctuate due to market conditions, and the prices mentioned above are based on recent observations and listings. For the most accurate and up-to-date valuations, consulting with reputable coin dealers or referencing reliable coin pricing guides like the Greysheet is recommended.

Why is the 1996 Prestige set so expensive?

Good point! This 1996 set is the rarest of all the Prestige Sets because of their low mintages of just 55,000 sets. And so many sets were cracked open to send out the Olympic Dollar to get graded because that coin is very rare, and the main reason why the set is so rare and valuable.
