Presidential dollar coins, minted from 2007 to 2016, are known for their edge lettering and several interesting error varieties that can be valuable to collectors.

Here are some of the most notable Presidential dollar coin errors:

  • Description: Some coins were released into circulation without any edge inscriptions (date, mint mark, mottos). These are also known as “Smooth Edge Dollars” or, particularly for the first issues, “Godless Dollars” as the motto “In God We Trust” was initially on the edge.
  • Prevalence: Most commonly found on the 2007 George Washington dollar (estimated 100,000-200,000 released), less common on later issues as the Mint improved its procedures.
  • Value: Can be worth $25 to several hundred dollars, depending on the president and condition.
  • Description: Coins that were passed through the edge lettering machine twice, resulting in two sets of inscriptions.
  • Varieties: Can be found with overlapping errors (two sets of lettering in the same direction) or inverted errors (two sets of lettering in opposite directions).
  • Prevalence: More common on the 2007 John Adams dollar, less common on the George Washington dollar.
  • Value: Can be worth hundreds of dollars in good condition.
  • Description: Blank planchets (discs of metal) that received edge lettering but were never struck with the obverse and reverse designs.
  • Value: Considered scarce and valuable.
  • Description: Presidential dollar designs struck on planchets intended for other coins, such as the Roosevelt dime or Jefferson nickel.
  • Value: Extremely rare and highly valuable, potentially selling for thousands of dollars.
  • Description: The obverse and reverse dies are misaligned, causing one side of the coin to be rotated relative to the other.
  • Value: Depends on the degree of rotation; rotations of 45 degrees or more are considered significant and more valuable.
  • Description: Other errors and varieties can occur due to inconsistencies in the striking process, including weak strikes, die breaks, die clashes, clipped planchets, and improper annealing.
  • Examples: “Pez Head” (missing part of Lady Liberty’s neck), “Wild Whisker” (die crack on Washington’s neck), “Wounded Liberty” (die gouge on Liberty’s chest).

  • Upside-down edge lettering on circulating coins is not considered an error. The edge lettering is applied in a separate step after the obverse and reverse are struck, and the coin’s orientation is random during this process.
  • Proof Presidential Dollars have their edge lettering applied during the striking process, so upside-down lettering on a Proof coin would be an error.
  • “Starburst” error: Radial lines emanating from the center of the coin, possibly caused by a die abnormality or post-mint damage.
  • Grading and Value: The value of an error coin depends on its rarity, condition, and the demand from collectors. It’s recommended to have potentially valuable errors authenticated and graded by a reputable third-party service.

The rare 1984 $1 coin was struck on a 10-cent blank in error, instead of a $1 blank, meaning the coin is silver rather than gold. One of the coins went to auction with a price guide of between $2,000 and $3,000 this week, sold by auctioneers Roxbury’s Auction House.

For example, this 2007 P Washington Dollar is missing the words E PLURIBUS UNUM (Photo 3a). The coin apparently became partially jammed (note the two edge marks Photo 3b, 3c) before exiting the machine, resulting in only a partial design transfer.
