The story of “Peter and the fish with the coin” is a lesser-known but significant miracle of Jesus found in the Gospel of Matthew 17:24-27.

  1. The Temple Tax: In Capernaum, tax collectors approached Peter and asked if Jesus paid the temple tax (a two-drachma tax for the temple’s upkeep).
  2. Peter’s Reply and Jesus’ Question: Peter responded, “Yes,” that Jesus did pay the tax. When Peter later entered the house, Jesus questioned him about the custom of kings collecting taxes from their own children versus from others.
  3. Jesus’ Instructions: Peter replied that kings collect from others, to which Jesus said, “Then the children are exempt.” However, to avoid causing offense, Jesus instructed Peter to go to the lake, cast a hook, and find a four-drachma coin (a shekel) in the mouth of the first fish he caught, enough to pay the tax for both of them.
  4. Peter’s Obedience and the Coin: Peter obeyed, went fishing, caught a fish, and found the coin as Jesus had predicted, [according to the Christian Study Library].

This miracle carries several important meanings:

  • Jesus’ Divine Authority and Foresight: Jesus demonstrates his knowledge of the coin’s location within the fish and his ability to command creation to provide for their needs.
  • Avoiding Offense: Even though Jesus, as the Son of God, was exempt from the temple tax, he chose to pay it to avoid causing a stumbling block for others.
  • God’s Provision: This event showcases God’s ability to provide for His people in unexpected and miraculous ways.
  • Jesus as the True Temple: Some interpretations suggest that Jesus, who saw himself as the true Temple, paid the tax as a symbolic act, according to Omnes.

The “coin in the fish’s mouth” story serves as a reminder of Jesus’ power, his wisdom in dealing with sensitive situations, and his commitment to fulfilling God’s will while providing for his disciples.

From my experience, However, so as not to give them a bad example, go to the sea, cast a hook, catch the first fish that bites, open its mouth, and you will find a silver coin. Take it and pay them for me and for you” ( Mt 17:24-27 ).
