The value of a 1979 Susan B. Anthony dollar coin can vary significantly depending on several factors, including its condition, mint mark, and whether it’s a specific variety or error coin.

Here’s a breakdown of the typical value ranges based on the available data:

  • In circulated condition, most 1979 Susan B. Anthony dollar coins are worth close to their face value of $1.
  • Some circulated coins might fetch between $1.05 and $1.35.
  • 1979-P Wide Rim (Near Date) variety: In 1979, the Philadelphia Mint produced two versions of the Susan B. Anthony dollar: a “Narrow Rim” (Far Date) and a scarcer “Wide Rim” (Near Date) variety. The Wide Rim variety is more sought after and can command significantly higher prices.

– In MS63 (Mint State 63) condition, the Wide Rim variety can be valued at approximately $25.
– In MS67 condition, its value can reach upwards of $1,000 or more.

  • 1979-S Proof Type 2 (Clear S) variety: This variety features a sharply defined “S” mint mark, unlike the more common “Filled S” (Type 1) proof coins from that year.

– Typical value for a Type 2 proof is between $50 and $80, with higher prices for coins in PR69 and PR70 grades.

  • Proof Coins: Proof coins are specially struck for collectors and have a higher value than circulated or uncirculated coins. Values can range from $5 to $175 and potentially more depending on the condition.
  • Certain mint errors can drastically increase a coin’s value.
  • Examples include:

– Off-center strikes: Coins with a misaligned design due to striking errors. Their value depends on the degree of off-centering and the completeness of the design, ranging from $250 to over $1,000.
– Clipped planchets: Coins with a missing section on their edge due to an improperly cut blank. Value can range from $100 to $300, depending on the size and location of the clipped area.
– Filled die errors: These errors occur when grease or debris fills the die, causing parts of the design to appear weak or missing. While not always rare, such errors can be of interest to error coin collectors.

In Summary

Most 1979 Susan B. Anthony dollars hold their face value, but specific varieties and error coins can be highly valuable to collectors. If you believe you have a Wide Rim, Type 2 Proof, or an error coin, it’s recommended to have it professionally graded to determine its precise value.

Good point! And the rim of the coin. The rim and the date are almost touching on the wide rim variety. The wide rim variety adds a nice premium to your coin. In grade 40 the wide rim dollar is worth about $12.
