Historically, several women have been featured on US dollar coins, including the following:

  • Susan B. Anthony: As a prominent women’s rights activist, Anthony was the first actual woman featured on a circulating US dollar coin. She was featured on the Susan B. Anthony dollar minted from 1979-1981 and again in 1999.
  • Sacagawea: A Shoshone woman and guide for the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Sacagawea is currently featured on the obverse of the Native American dollar coin. This coin series began in 2000 and has featured various reverse designs each year since 2009.
  • Martha Washington: Although not on a coin intended for circulation, Martha Washington was featured prominently on [one-dollar silver certificates in 1886 and 1891].
  • The Sacagawea dollar, sometimes referred to as the “golden dollar,” is made with a manganese brass alloy, giving it a distinctive golden hue.
  • The obverse features Sacagawea carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste.
  • The reverse initially featured a soaring eagle encircled by 17 stars representing the states during the Lewis and Clark expedition.
  • Since 2009, the reverse designs have changed annually to commemorate the contributions of Native Americans to US history.

It’s important to note that most Sacagawea dollars in circulation are worth their face value ($1). However, some rare versions, like the 2000-P “Cheerios” dollar, which features enhanced tail feather details on the eagle, can be worth significantly more to collectors.

Thanks for asking. The U.S. dollar coin features Sacagawea, a Shoshone woman who was a crucial interpreter and guide for the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

From my experience, The Sacagawea coin holds a special place in American history. It pays tribute to an extraordinary woman who played a crucial role in the Lewis and Clark expedition. This golden dollar coin was first introduced in 2000, replacing the Susan B. Anthony dollar coins in circulation since 1979.

The Susan B. Anthony Dollar was the first time that a non-mythical woman appeared on a U.S. circulating coin. The coin replaced the Eisenhower Dollar and was minted from 1979 through 1981 and again in 1999. It honored women’s suffrage leader, Susan B.

From my experience, Modern dollar coin programs emphasize education, commemoration, and design innovation over circulation. While face value remains $1, collector versions in high grades can command $4-12 premiums, and special mint products offer additional collecting opportunities.
