When it comes to the most valuable 1972 Eisenhower dollar coins, several factors come into play, primarily rarity and condition.

Here are the key points to consider when determining the most valuable 1972 Eisenhower dollar coin:

  • Circulated vs. Uncirculated: In low grades (circulated condition), 1972 Eisenhower dollars, including those with a ‘D’ mint mark (Denver), are worth only slightly more than their face value, often falling in the range of $1.05 to $1.50. However, the value of a 1972 Eisenhower dollar significantly increases in higher grades (uncirculated condition), with coins graded MS66 or higher fetching thousands of dollars. For example, a 1972-D Clad Business Strike graded PCGS MS67+ sold for $13,200 in July 2023.
  • Silver Content: Unlike their clad counterparts, the 1972-S Eisenhower dollars are composed of 40% silver and were primarily released as collector’s items in special packaging. These silver versions, especially those in pristine, uncirculated condition, tend to hold higher value than their copper-nickel clad counterparts. A 1972-S Uncirculated Silver Ike graded PCGS MS67 sold for $5,750 in 2005.
  • Errors and Varieties: As with any coin series, errors and varieties can significantly boost the value of a 1972 Eisenhower dollar. For example, some 1972 Eisenhower dollars feature a doubled die error, which can substantially increase their worth. There are also specific varieties like the 1972 Type 2 variety, easily identifiable by the lack of islands below Florida on the reverse side of the coin, which are considered rare and highly sought after, with prices ranging from $80 to over $1000. One example, a 1972 Eisenhower DDO/DDR, ANACS certified MS67, was available for purchase at $30,000.
  • Mint Mark: While Philadelphia (no mint mark) and Denver (D mint mark) produced copper-nickel clad Eisenhower dollars for circulation, the San Francisco Mint (S mint mark) produced 40% silver clad versions for collectors, [according to Wikipedia] . This makes the San Francisco minted coins generally more valuable, especially in higher grades or when found in their original packaging.

In summary, the most valuable 1972 Eisenhower dollar coins are typically uncirculated specimens, those containing 40% silver, and coins exhibiting rare errors or varieties. The highest price recorded in the search results was $13,200 for a 1972-D Clad Business Strike graded PCGS MS67+. Another example, a 1972-S DDO/DDR, certified MS67, is currently available for purchase at $30,000. Therefore, the potential value of a 1972 dollar coin can range from slightly above face value for a circulated clad coin to potentially thousands of dollars for rare uncirculated silver coins or coins with notable errors.

Good point! And as you can see well you can’t see any of the islands at all in mintstate grades the 1972. Type one and type three Ike dollars sell for about a hundred bucks. But the type.

Good point! Look for a Silver or Copper Stripe
If your Ike dollar has an ā€œSā€ mint mark on the obverse, it is silver clad, or 40% silver. You can also check the edge of the coin for a silver stripe. If you find one, you most likely have a 40% silver, or silver clad Eisenhower dollar.

From my experience, Among the most popular are three different reverse varieties among the 1972 Eisenhower Dollars struck at the Philadelphia Mint. These varieties are primarily distinguished by the design details on the planet Earth as seen within the Apollo 11 Insignia on the reverse.
