While often considered a classic example of a 50/50 probability, recent research suggests that a coin flip isn’t perfectly even.

  • Same-side bias: Studies have shown that when a coin is flipped by a human, it tends to land on the same side it started on slightly more often than not. This “same-side bias” has been observed in large-scale experiments, with one study of 350,757 coin flips finding a bias of 50.8%. This means if the coin starts heads up, it’s slightly more likely to land heads up, and vice versa.
  • Potential causes of the bias: This bias is thought to arise from the physics of the flip itself, where the initial “upward velocity” combined with the spinning motion can create a slight wobble or precession that favors the initial side. Different flippers may also exhibit varying levels of bias depending on their technique.
  • Still close to 50/50 for practical purposes: For most everyday situations, this slight bias is too small to be noticeable or to significantly influence the outcome of a single coin toss. A 1% bias is unlikely to be perceptible over a few flips.
  • Impact in high-stakes situations: However, in situations involving a very large number of flips, or where even a small advantage is significant (like in gambling), this bias could become more relevant.
  • Minimizing bias: One way to achieve a more truly random result is to ensure the person calling the outcome doesn’t know the starting position of the coin. Another option is to use an alternative method like jiggling the coin between curved palms rather than flipping it.

In summary, while the ideal mathematical model suggests a 50/50 probability, real-world coin flips exhibit a slight bias towards the starting side due to the physics of the toss and human factors. Despite this, for most practical applications, a coin toss remains a reasonably fair and random method for decision-making.

It will always be 50/50. Each coin flip is an independent event, so the previous results have no bearing on the results of the next flip.

Despite frequent speculation otherwise by unlucky players, coin flips are truly 50/50. Because both results have unique animations, the player can determine whether the flip succeeded as soon as they choose a face; specifically, when the animation begins, whatever face is opposite of the final result will be shown.
