The weight of a coin depends on the type of coin and the country it’s from.

For example, current circulating US coins have the following weights:

  • Penny: 2.5 grams
  • Nickel: 5.0 grams
  • Dime: 2.268 grams
  • Quarter: 5.67 grams
  • Half Dollar: 11.340 grams
  • Native American $1 Coin: 8.100 grams

It’s important to note that the weight of some older versions of these coins may vary due to changes in their metallic composition over time. For instance, pennies minted before 1982 were made of 95% copper and weighed 3.11 grams, while those minted after that year are copper-plated zinc and weigh 2.5 grams.

Many renowned coins, such as the American Silver Eagle from the United States Mint, the Silver Britannia from The Royal Mint in the United Kingdom, the Silver Maple Leaf from the Royal Canadian Mint, and the Silver Kangaroo from the Perth Mint, all weigh precisely one Troy ounce.
