Different 1 oz gold coins have slightly different dimensions, but generally, they are roughly the size of a U.S. half-dollar coin.

For example, a 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin has a diameter of 32.7 mm (1.29 inches) and a thickness of 2.87 mm. It contains 1 troy ounce of gold, but because it is alloyed with copper and silver for durability (22 karat gold), its total weight is slightly higher, at 33.93 grams (1.0909 troy ounces).

In contrast, a 1 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin has a diameter of 30 mm and a thickness of 2.80 mm. It is made of 99.99% pure gold, weighing exactly 1 troy ounce (31.1035 grams).

A 1 oz Gold Britannia coin measures 32.69 mm in diameter and 2.30 mm in thickness. It also contains 1 troy ounce of pure gold.

The 1 oz South African Krugerrand has a diameter of 32.77 mm and a thickness of 2.84 mm. Like the American Gold Eagle, it is made of 22-karat gold, with copper making up the rest of its 33.93 grams gross weight.

To put these dimensions into perspective:

  • A U.S. half-dollar coin has a diameter of 30.61 mm and a thickness of 2.15 mm.

Therefore, you can expect a 1 oz gold coin to be slightly larger than a U.S. half-dollar in diameter, with some variations in thickness depending on the specific coin.

I can help with that. The 1/10-ounce Eagle Gold Bullion Coin is approximately the size of a dime. The smallest of the gold eagles, it contains the same 22-karat gold as the larger coins.
