Generally, the silver value of a half dollar coin depends on two main factors:

  1. The year of minting: The US Mint changed the silver composition of half dollars over time.
  2. The current market price of silver: This fluctuates daily.

Based on the year of minting, half dollars can fall into these categories:

  • 1964 and earlier: These contain 90% silver and are the most valuable due to their silver content. For example, as of August 2025, a 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar in circulated condition is worth approximately $14-$14.75 in silver melt value.
  • 1965-1970: These contain 40% silver. As of August 2025, a Kennedy Half Dollar from this period has a melt value of about $5.63.
  • After 1970: Most of these coins have no silver content and are only worth their face value, with some exceptions for collector issues.
  • Check the Date: As mentioned, the year is the primary indicator of silver content.
  • Examine the Edge: Silver coins have a distinctive look at the edge.

– 90% silver coins will have a solid silver edge.
– 40% silver coins (1965-1970) will show a silver layer sandwiching a copper core.
– Clad (non-silver) coins will have a prominent copper layer.

  • Magnet Test: Silver is not magnetic. If the coin sticks to a magnet, it is not silver.
  • Weight: 90% silver half dollars weigh 12.5 grams, 40% silver coins weigh 11.5 grams, and clad coins weigh 11.34 grams.

The actual worth of a silver half dollar can vary greatly depending on its:

  • Condition (grade): Uncirculated coins or those with rare features can fetch a significantly higher price than their melt value.
  • Rarity: Certain years or mint marks might be more sought after by collectors, increasing their value.

For example, while the melt value of a 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar is around $14-$14.75, an uncirculated example can sell for as much as $5200.

Good point! The only coin that continued to be made in silver was the Kennedy Half Dollar which was made in 40% silver for circulation only in 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, and 1969. This set includes all five of these 40% silver coins. After 1969, no circulating coins of any denomination were ever made in silver again.

From my experience, From 1964 to 1965, these coins were struck with 90% silver. However, in 1965, due to the rising price of silver, the composition was changed to 40% silver and 60% copper, marking a significant shift in the material makeup of Kennedy half dollars.
