Gold coins come in a variety of sizes and weights, primarily measured in troy ounces or fractions thereof.

Here’s a breakdown of common gold coin sizes:

  • This is the standard weight for buying gold bullion.
  • Most mints offer 1 oz versions of their popular coins.
  • An American Gold Eagle 1 oz coin has a diameter of 32.70 mm (1.29 in.) and a thickness of 2.87 mm (0.11 in.), with a gross weight of 1.0909 troy ounces (33.930 grams) and a $50 face value.
  • These coins weigh less than one troy ounce.
  • They are becoming increasingly popular for investors looking for smaller purchases or diversifying their portfolio.
  • Most mints offer fractional versions of their bullion coins in:

– 1/2 oz: The American Gold Eagle 1/2 oz coin has a diameter of 27 mm and a thickness of 2.24 mm. [According to BullionMax] , a 1/2 oz gold coin has a diameter very close to the size of a quarter.
– 1/4 oz: An American Gold Eagle 1/4 oz coin has a diameter of 22 mm and a thickness of 1.83 mm.
– 1/10 oz: A $5 Gold American Eagle coin weighs approximately a tenth of an ounce and has a diameter of 16.5 millimeters and a thickness of 1.19 millimeters. These are typically the size of a dime.

  • Some mints offer even smaller fractional weights, like 1/20 oz and 1 gram, [according to JM Bullion] and [Hero Bullion].
  • Larger sizes are also available, such as 2 oz and 1 kilo.
  • It’s important to note that the dimensions (diameter and thickness) of coins with the same weight and purity can vary slightly between mints due to different production processes and molds.

Important consideration: While fractional coins are more affordable, they often carry a higher premium (markup over spot price) compared to 1 oz coins.
