Mexico, as a republic, has issued various coins throughout its history. Some notable examples include:

  • 8 Reales: These were widely circulated silver coins, sometimes referred to as the “silver dollars” of their time. They feature the radiant cap-and-ray design symbolizing liberty on the obverse, and the Mexican eagle and snake emblem on the reverse. Mexico used a system of dineros and granos to measure the fineness of their coins, with 10 Ds. 20 Gs (dineros and granos) indicating a fineness of .902777. The 8 reales were minted from 1823 to 1897 . Examples include the Republica Mexicana Coin 8 R C 1896 A M 10 D 20 Wight 26.97g, which is a used coin available for $655, and various other 8 Reales coins from different mints and years, some valued at several thousand dollars depending on their condition and rarity.
  • 1 Peso: Following the discontinuation of coinage denominated in reales in 1897, the 1 Peso coins were introduced, [according to APMEX] . These coins are similar to the 8 reales and were used until the Caballito peso was introduced in 1910. An example is the 1898-1909 Silver Mexican 1 Peso Cap & Rays AU Coin, 0.79 oz, which sells for $83.32.
  • 5 C Centavo: Some Mexican Republic coins include the 5 C Centavo, [according to eBay] . A used 5 C Republica Mexicana Coin can be found for $60 or $25.
  • Other Denominations: The United Mexican States also issued other coins, including silver 1⁄2, 1, 2, 4 reales, and gold 1⁄2, 1, 2, 4, and 8 escudos. Silver 1⁄4 reales were added in 1842. Copper coins for 1⁄16, 1⁄8, and 1⁄4 real were issued by both the federal government and state governments.
  • Second Republic of Mexico Coins: This category covers coins minted between 1867 and 1905, [according to eBay] . Examples include:

– 10 Centavos.
– 1872 Peso Indiana.
– 1898 Mexico Peso.
– 8 Reales.
– Mexico 5 Centavos.
– Mexico 8 Reales Coin Indiana.
– Mexico SECOND REPUBLIC Centavo KM 392 (1882-1883).
– 1876-As NGC AU 50 Mexico 50 Centavos Alamos Mint Balance Scale Coin.
– 1882 Libertad Mexican Silvery Coin.

– Mexico 1 Centavo by Year and Grade 1900-1949.
– Republica Mexicana 1899 Un Peso – Mexico Coins.
– 1906 One Centavo Coin.

Mexican coins, including those from the Republic era, are valued by collectors for their rarity, historical importance, and unique designs, says Blanchard and Company. The value is often determined by the historical context, limited mintage, and craftsmanship. Some coins can be very valuable, with examples of rare Mexican coins being worth a significant amount of money.
