The diameter of a coin varies depending on the coin’s denomination, country of origin, and even the year it was minted.

  • A standard US quarter has a diameter of 24.26 mm.
  • A US penny has a diameter of 19.05 mm.
  • A US nickel has a diameter of 21.21 mm.
  • A US dime has a diameter of 17.91 mm.
  • A Euro coin’s diameter can range from 16.25 mm for a 1 Cent coin to 25.75 mm for a 2 Euro coin.
  • Canadian coin diameters also vary, with a One Cent coin (1920-present) measuring 19mm and a Two Dollar coin (1996-present) measuring 28mm.
  • You can use a ruler or a caliper for a direct measurement.
  • A digital caliper is generally the most accurate method for precise measurements.

In summary, there is no single diameter for “a coin”. It is important to specify the type of coin you are interested in or to measure the specific coin you are dealing with if precise dimensions are needed.

Great question! The coin is 0.75 inches (19.05 mm) in diameter and 0.0598 inches (1.52 mm) in thickness. The current copper-plated zinc cent issued since 1982 weighs 2.5 grams, while the previous 95% copper cent still found in circulation weighed 3.11 g (see further below).

Thanks for asking. The $1 coin is made of 92% copper, 6% aluminium and 2% nickel. It is circular in shape and has an interrupted milled edge. It weighs 9 grams and is 25 millimetres in diameter. The $2 coin was first introduced on 20 June 1988.
