Chase Lawrence is best known as the lead vocalist and synth player for the indie pop-rock band COIN. The band, which formed in Nashville, Tennessee in 2012, recently disbanded in January 2025. Lawrence was born in West Virginia.
Lawrence attended Belmont University, where he met Joe Memmel, who would become COIN’s guitarist. The band was initially a quartet, also including Ryan Winnen on drums and Zach Dyke on bass, though Dyke later departed in 2018. COIN gained popularity with singles like “Talk Too Much” and “Chapstick”.
In January 2025, Chase Lawrence announced that COIN was disbanding due to “revelations” and “behaviors” on the part of his bandmates that conflicted with his values. While not specifying the nature of the allegations, Lawrence stated that he believed in accountability and doing what is right.
Despite the disbandment, Lawrence has indicated that he plans to continue making music.
In March 2025, it was announced that the COIN song “Take It or Leave It” would be featured in the game MLB: The Show.
Why did COIN name their song Brad Pitt?
Why did it feel like the right idea to name the song after Brad Pitt? Lawrence: For us, “Brad Pitt” represented this idea of eternal relevance or the collective consciousness, as we call it in our world, but really the title is just a symbol of youth, somebody that’s aged gracefully and has almost denied nature.
Why did COIN cancel their shows?
Coin disbanded at the end of January 2025 due to allegations of misconduct.
What happened to COIN the band?
I can help with that. “Creating a space for love & joy through music has always been my mission,” Lawrence added in his statement. “Discovering that this space has been compromised by the actions of others is truly heartbreaking. Unfortunately, these developments have led me to the decision that COIN can no longer continue as a band.”
What is a chase COIN?
