Currently, the circulating United States coins feature the following individuals on their obverse (heads) side:

  • Penny (1 cent): Abraham Lincoln
  • Nickel (5 cents): Thomas Jefferson
  • Dime (10 cents): Franklin D. Roosevelt
  • Quarter (25 cents): George Washington (the portrait changed in 2022 to a right-facing image)
  • Half Dollar (50 cents): John F. Kennedy
  • Native American $1 Coin: Sacagawea carrying her baby, Jean-Baptiste
  • American Innovation $1 Coin: The Statue of Liberty

It’s worth noting that while half dollars and dollar coins are minted annually, they are primarily intended for collectors and are not widely found in circulation.

Thanks for asking. Money now in circulation bears the images of seven U.S. presidents — George Washington on the $1 bill and quarter coin, Thomas Jefferson on the $2 bill and nickel, Abraham Lincoln on the $5 bill and penny, Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill and Ulysses S. Grant on the $50 bill.

Abraham Lincoln appears on the penny, Thomas Jefferson is on the nickel, Franklin D. Roosevelt is featured on the dime, George Washington adorns the quarter-dollar, and John F. Kennedy is honored on the half-dollar. Ever wonder how certain presidents ended up being featured on American coins?

Great question! The U.S. Mint issued the Sacagawea Golden Dollar from 2000 to 2008. It was the first dollar made with an outer layer of manganese brass, giving it a golden color. The obverse design features Sacagawea and the reverse depicts a soaring eagle.
