When considering 1979 Susan B. Anthony dollar coin errors, several notable examples attract collector interest:

  • Description: This variety from the Philadelphia Mint has a wider rim, causing the date to be very close to the edge.
  • Rarity and Value: It is scarcer and more valuable than the narrow rim variety, with prices ranging from $13.50 to $1,900 for high-grade examples.
  • Identification: Look for a thick rim with the date very close to the edge, about the width of the numeral 1 in the date.
  • Description: This is the more common variety from the Philadelphia Mint, featuring a narrower rim and the date further from the edge.
  • Rarity and Value: This variety is not considered rare and doesn’t command a significant premium. Prices typically range from $1.60 to $1,100 for higher grades.
  • Identification: The rim appears thinner, and the date is further from the edge compared to the Wide Rim variety.
  • Description: Early 1979 proof coins from the San Francisco Mint have an “S” mint mark that appears like a blob due to a worn punch, while later coins have a clear “S”.
  • Rarity and Value: The “Blob S” (Type 1) is more common and less valuable, while the “Clear S” (Type 2) is scarcer and more sought after by collectors.
  • Identification: Examine the mint mark; a poorly formed or filled-in “S” indicates the “Blob S” variety, while a well-defined “S” is the “Clear S”.

Other errors found on 1979 Susan B. Anthony dollars include clipped planchets (missing edge portions), off-center strikes (misaligned design), coin blob errors (deformity on the surface), filled D dots (filled-in “D” mint mark), and struck-through grease errors (weak or missing design elements).

The value of these error coins can vary significantly based on their condition, demand, and the specific nature of the error.

Like the Philadelphia-struck coins, the 1979 Dollar coins bearing the “S” mint mark are more valuable. The coins struck in San Francisco had a few errors and varieties with the highest value. These coins can be priced between $28 and $4,850 depending on the condition, errors, and strike.

These “Filled S” (Type 1) Anthony dollar Proofs were due to a worn mint mark punch. Late in the year, the punch was replaced and much scarcer 1979 “Clear S” (Type 2) Proofs were created. Honoring women’s rights activist Susan B.
