The value of a George Washington dollar coin largely depends on its condition and whether it’s a standard issue or a rare error.

Generally

  • Most George Washington presidential dollar coins are worth their face value of $1, [according to Quora] . They are common, and millions were minted in 2007.
  • Uncirculated coins in excellent condition might fetch a slight premium, perhaps $2-$4.

However, some error coins can be worth considerably more

  • Missing Edge Lettering: This error, where the “E Pluribus Unum,” “In God We Trust,” date, and mint mark are absent from the coin’s edge, can make the coin worth between $20 and a little over $100.
  • Upside-Down Motto Error: A coin with the motto printed upside down can be a collectible item, with one example listed on eBay for $27.77.
  • Other Errors: Less common errors like doubled edge lettering or lettered blank planchets can also increase the coin’s value, depending on their severity and rarity.
  • 1789-1797 is not the minting date: This indicates the years George Washington served as president, not when the coin was minted. The George Washington Presidential dollar coins were minted in 2007.
  • “Gold” Appearance: The coin is not made of gold but rather copper clad in brass.
  • Professional Appraisal: For accurate valuation, especially for potential error coins, consider getting a professional appraisal online or in-person.

In conclusion, while most George Washington Presidential dollar coins are worth face value, errors like missing edge lettering can significantly increase their value to collectors.

Thanks for asking. This does pose an interesting problem. The coins are not only missing the mottos E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST; they are also missing the date and mintmark. (Photo 2b) Washington dollar coins missing the edge lettering are being found in rolls minted at both the Denver and Philadelphia Mints.

As a way of honoring more presidents, the U.S. Mint began issuing Presidential Dollar coins in the 2000s. Most are worth about face value, but a couple are valued in six figures due to errors.
