Abraham Lincoln is featured on the United States one-cent coin, commonly known as the penny . His portrait has graced the obverse (heads side) of the penny since 1909, initially designed by Victor David Brenner. Lincoln was the first real person to be featured on a regularly circulating U.S. coin, breaking from the tradition of depicting allegorical figures.

While the obverse design of Lincoln has remained largely the same, the reverse (tails side) has undergone several changes throughout the years:

  • 1909-1958: The “Wheat Ears” design, featuring two stalks of wheat framing the denomination.
  • 1959-2008: The Lincoln Memorial design, introduced for the sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) of Lincoln’s birth.
  • 2009: Four special bicentennial designs were issued to celebrate Lincoln’s 200th birthday, each depicting a different stage of his life.
  • 2010-Present: The “Union Shield” design, symbolizing Lincoln’s preservation of the United States as a unified country.

In summary, Abraham Lincoln is on the United States penny, and has been since 1909.

I can help with that. In 1909, Abraham Lincoln became the first president featured on our coins in honor of his 100th birthday. The Lincoln penny obverse showed the image of Lincoln designed by Victor David Brenner that is still used today. From 1909 to 1958 the reverse featured two sheaves of wheat.

The United States five-dollar bill (US$5) is a denomination of United States currency. The current $5 bill features U.S. president Abraham Lincoln and the coat of arms of United States on the front and the Lincoln Memorial on the back. All $5 bills issued today are Federal Reserve Notes.

Good point! Abraham Lincoln appears on the penny, Thomas Jefferson is on the nickel, Franklin D. Roosevelt is featured on the dime, George Washington adorns the quarter-dollar, and John F. Kennedy is honored on the half-dollar. Ever wonder how certain presidents ended up being featured on American coins?
