The golden coins in the John Wick movie franchise are a mysterious and intriguing aspect of the secret criminal underworld inhabited by John Wick and other assassins.

Here’s what they signify:

  • Currency and membership: These gold coins are used as a form of untraceable currency for services within the criminal underworld, particularly in the Continental hotel chains, a neutral ground for assassins. They also serve as a membership card, signifying the holder’s status within this society.
  • Trust and favors: The coins don’t have a fixed monetary value like traditional money. Instead, they represent a promise or a favor, symbolizing a social agreement and the commerce of relationships within the assassin world. A single coin can be exchanged for various goods and services, ranging from a drink to a weapon or even medical assistance.
  • Symbolism: The coins feature a lion and a shield on one side with the Latin phrase “Ens Causa Sui” (meaning “something generated within itself”), and on the other, a person with a shield and the phrase “Ex Unitae Vires” (“Out of unity comes strength”). These phrases reflect the independence and self-reliance of the assassins within the system, while also highlighting the strength found in their collective unity and adherence to the underworld’s code.

In essence, the John Wick coins are more than just a means of payment; they are a symbol of trust, honor, and belonging within the dangerous world of assassins.

      Blood Oath Marker
“Quod Debitum Sanquine.” These are the words written on the Blood Oath Marker from the world of John Wick. The Latin phrase translates to “The Blood Debt” but practically stands as the strongest and most dangerous promise that anyone could make.

Great question! At the top of the coin is the phrase “Ens Causa Sui,” or “Something generated within itself.” At the bottom are the Roman numerals MMI for 2001. On the reverse side is a person with a shield emblazoned with a cross. Below the person is a large laurel.

It is the Medallion of an Adjudicator, and they hold much power because of the medallion. It has the inscription “Actiones Secundum Fidei” Which means “We act according to what we believe.” This prop comes with a custom LEGO® John Wick minifigure!
