The coin tire trick, also known as the penny test, is a simple way to check your tire’s tread depth.

Here’s how to perform it:

  1. Grab a penny: You’ll need a US penny for this test.
  2. Locate the tread grooves: Find the raised sections of rubber on your tire known as the tread ribs.
  3. Insert the penny: Place the penny into a tread groove with Abraham Lincoln’s head facing downwards, towards the tire.
  4. Observe the tread: If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, your tire tread is worn to 2/32nds of an inch or less, meaning it’s time to replace your tires.
  5. If his head is covered: If the tread covers any part of Lincoln’s head, your tread depth is above 2/32nds of an inch, and your tires are generally considered to have enough tread.

  • Multiple Checks: Check several places around each tire, especially areas that appear more worn, as wear can be uneven.
  • Legal vs. Recommended: While 2/32nds of an inch is the minimum legal tread depth in most places, many tire and automotive professionals recommend replacing tires when the tread reaches 4/32nds of an inch for optimal safety and performance, especially in wet or snowy conditions.
  • Quarter Test: To check if your tires have at least 4/32nds of tread, you can perform the “quarter test” using a similar method, inserting a quarter with George Washington’s head facing downwards. If you can see the top of Washington’s head, your tires are below 4/32nds, [according to Discount Tire].
  • Other Indicators: Tires also have built-in treadwear indicator bars that become flush with the tread when it’s time for replacement. You can also use a dedicated tread depth gauge for a more precise measurement.
  • Safety First: Even if your tires pass the penny test, it’s wise to have them professionally inspected if you have any concerns about their condition.

Down then stick your penny into multiple points of the tread across your tire to check for wear. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s. Head it’s time to get your tires checked by a professional.

The answer could be in your pocket. Take a penny and place it into several tread grooves across your tire. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head it’s time to start tire shopping.

Thanks for asking. The 20p Test
If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured when it is inserted, then your tread is above the legal limit. If the outer band of the coin is visible, then your tyres may be illegal and unsafe and should be checked immediately by a qualified tyre professional.
