The value of a 1983 Kennedy Half Dollar depends on several factors, including its condition (grade), mint mark, and whether it has any errors.

  • Circulated condition: A 1983 Kennedy Half Dollar in circulated condition (worn, with scratches or nicks) is generally worth its face value ($0.50), [according to YouTube].
  • Uncirculated condition: Coins in pristine, uncirculated condition can sell for more. According to the NGC Price Guide, as of August 2025, a 1983-P half dollar in pristine, uncirculated condition can sell for as much as $550.
  • Mint Mark:

– P (Philadelphia) Mint: A 1983-P Kennedy half dollar graded at mint state 67 sold for $360.
– D (Denver) Mint: A 1983-D Kennedy Half Dollar in circulated condition is worth between $0.60 and $0.75. A mint state 68 sold for over $4,200. A mint state 67+ 1983D mintmark Kennedy half-dollar sold for $550. Some pristine, uncirculated 1983-D Half Dollars have sold for as much as $5500.
– S (San Francisco) Mint (Proof): 1983 proof Kennedy half dollars (with an “S” mint mark), sold in proof sets, are considered common. A 1983 proof Kennedy half-dollar graded at a perfect proof 70 deep cameo sold for $51.

  • Errors: 1983 Kennedy Half Dollars with mint errors can be valuable. Some examples include:

– Broadstruck error (graded 63) sold for around $90.
– Double strike and broadstruck error with an obverse indent sold for over $800.
– Off-center strike and a reverse indent sold for over $800.
– Multi-strike and broad strike error sold for $960.
– Struck 10% off-center sold for $129 and $144.
– Tilted partial collar (graded 64) sold for $25. Another (graded 62) sold for around $100.
– Rare 1983-P John F. Kennedy Half Dollar with strong die clash marks on the obverse and extensive clash marks on the reverse sold for $470.

  • Silver Content: 1983 Kennedy half dollars are not made of silver. They are composed of an outer layer of 75% copper and 25% nickel bonded to an inner core of pure copper. The silver content was removed from half dollars in 1971.
  • Mintage Numbers: The 1983-D Kennedy Half Dollar was minted in a large quantity (32,472,244), making it a less-collectible item, [according to Numiis].

To determine the precise value of your 1983 half dollar, it’s recommended to have it professionally graded by a reputable coin grading service.

I can help with that. Expert’s Assistant: The mint mark on Kennedy half dollar coins is usually located on the obverse (front) side of the coin, just below the portrait of President Kennedy and above the date. It can be a letter like D (Denver), S (San Francisco), or no mark for Philadelphia.

Great question! The 1983-S Kennedy Half is referred to as the silver clad, since it was made of the copper-nickel alloy that was allowed when silver was banned from being used.
