There was no 1979 Susan B. Anthony gold coin. The Susan B. Anthony dollar coins were made from a composition of 75% copper and 25% nickel, clad to a pure copper core . There are some companies that sell gold-plated Susan B. Anthony dollars, but these are not official U.S. Mint products.

The value of a 1979 Susan B. Anthony dollar depends on its condition and whether it’s a regular strike coin or a proof coin.

  • Circulated: Most circulated coins are only worth face value, [according to Benzinga].
  • Uncirculated: Uncirculated coins are worth more than face value. The value can range from $1.60 up to $1,550 or more, depending on the mint mark and other factors.
  • Wide Rim (Near Date) Variety: This variety, found on some 1979 Philadelphia minted coins, is scarcer and more valuable than the regular strike coins. A 1979-P Wide Rim dollar in Mint State 67+ condition sold for over $6,400.
  • Error coins: Some 1979 Susan B. Anthony dollars have minting errors that make them very valuable. For example, a 1979 dollar coin struck entirely incorrectly using Sacagawea dollar dies sold for over $16,400.
  • 1979-S Type 1 (Filled S Mint Mark): These coins were struck with a worn mint mark punch, resulting in a less defined “S.” They are generally more common than the Type 2 proofs and are worth around $10 in perfect condition.
  • 1979-S Type 2 (Clear S Mint Mark): These coins were struck with a new, sharper mint mark punch. They are scarcer than the Type 1 proofs and are more valuable, with a value ranging from $35 up to $135 in perfect condition.
  • Condition: The better the condition of the coin, the more valuable it will be.
  • Mint Mark: The mint mark (P for Philadelphia, D for Denver, or S for San Francisco) can affect the value.
  • Varieties: Some varieties, like the 1979-P Wide Rim, are scarcer and more valuable.
  • Errors: Minting errors can significantly increase a coin’s value.

If you have a 1979 Susan B. Anthony dollar, it’s a good idea to have it appraised by a professional coin dealer or authenticator to determine its precise value.

On average, a Susan B Anthony coin that has been previously circulated is worth about $1.05-$1.35. Since they were originally $1 coins, they have only increased slightly in numismatic value. However, there are some exceptions to this rule. A coin in pristine, uncirculated condition can sell for up to $1950.

Thanks for asking. 1979-S Type I and Type II: The 1979-S Anthony Dollar comes in two varieties: Type I, which features a larger date, and Type II, which features a smaller date. These subtle differences can greatly affect the coin’s value, with the Type I version being more desirable.
