If you have a 1974 Eisenhower dollar with no mint mark , its value depends on its condition and whether it’s a regular circulation strike or a silver-clad coin.

  • These coins were minted in Philadelphia and generally don’t have a high value unless they’re in exceptionally pristine, uncirculated condition.
  • Circulated 1974 Eisenhower dollars without a mint mark are worth about $1.05-$1.50 according to the NGC price guide as of August 2025.
  • Uncirculated examples can be worth significantly more, ranging from $1.10 for lower uncirculated grades (like MS50) up to $900 for a high-grade example (MS67) according to the NGC price guide.
  • Some 1974 Eisenhower dollars were specially minted in San Francisco using a 40% silver composition. These do have an “S” mint mark located on the obverse (front) of the coin, below Eisenhower’s portrait and above the date.
  • If your coin does not have a mint mark , it’s not a silver-clad coin.
  • The melt value of a 40% silver Eisenhower dollar (including the 1974-S) is approximately $11.99 as of August 2025.
  • However, 1974-S silver dollars in uncirculated condition can sell for much more on the open market, with some examples reaching as high as $9000 according to the NGC price guide.
  1. Examine the coin carefully for a mint mark. If there’s no mint mark, it’s a Philadelphia-minted coin and likely not silver.
  2. Assess the coin’s condition. Uncirculated coins in excellent condition are worth significantly more than circulated ones.
  3. Consider having your coin graded by a professional service like NGC if you believe it is a valuable example.

In conclusion, a 1974 one dollar coin with no mint mark is likely a copper-nickel clad coin and its value will depend mainly on its condition. If it’s a circulated coin, its value will be close to face value. If it’s in uncirculated condition, it could be worth a few dollars or potentially hundreds for very high grades.

The 1974 Eisenhower silver dollar is not extremely rare, but high-grade versions and error coins can be valuable. The 40% silver versions were only made for collectors, making them scarcer than regular clad coins.

What is the error coin on the 1974 dollar coin?

One popular and exceedingly rare 1974 silver dollar error is often known as the “ silver planchet Ike dollar.” These coins were mistakenly struck on the silver planchet used to make San Francisco’s silver Ike dollars.

If you have an Ike dollar with no mint mark or a D above the date, it’s only going to be worth face value unless it’s in superb condition. If it’s a proof coin with an S mint mark, the cupronickel version currently retails for about $5 while the 40% silver version goes for about $12.
