The value of a 1974 50-cent coin (Kennedy Half Dollar) depends on its condition and whether it has any errors.

  • Face Value: A standard, circulated 1974 Kennedy Half Dollar is generally only worth its face value of $0.50.
  • Uncirculated Condition: In pristine, uncirculated condition, the value can increase.

– An uncirculated 1974 half dollar can be worth between $0.80 and $3,150, depending on the specific coin and its grade.
– For example, a 1974-D half dollar in uncirculated condition (MS) could be worth $0.80 – $295.

  • Errors: Certain errors can significantly increase the value of a 1974 half dollar:

– Doubled Die Obverse (DDO): This is a noticeable doubling in the design on the front of the coin. These coins can be worth anywhere from $11.00 to potentially over $775. Some have sold for $295.
– Die Crack: These coins can be worth $1.50 – $10.
– Off-Center Strike: These coins can be worth $50 – $300+.
– Clashed Dies: These coins can be worth $20 – $150+.

  • Proof Coins: A 1974-S Proof Kennedy Half Dollar, minted in San Francisco, was produced in limited quantities and can be more valuable than standard circulation strikes.
  1. Examine the condition: Assess the wear and tear on the coin. Is it circulated or uncirculated?
  2. Look for errors: Carefully inspect both sides of the coin for any doubling, cracks, or off-center strikes.
  3. Consult a coin expert or reputable guide: For a precise valuation, it’s recommended to have your coin professionally graded or compare it to known examples in specialized numismatic resources.

From my experience, Starting in 1964, the Kennedy was made from 90% silver then was cut down to 40% silver. From 1971 and onward, the Kennedy Half Dollars are made from a copper-nickel clad composition.
