The value of a 1972 Kennedy half dollar can vary significantly based on its condition, mint mark, and whether it has any errors.

  • Circulated coins: In average circulated condition, a 1972 Kennedy half dollar is typically worth close to its face value of 50 cents, [according to NGC’s price guide].
  • Uncirculated coins: Uncirculated examples in high grades (e.g., MS63, MS64, or higher) can be worth significantly more, potentially hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
  • Proof coins: The 1972-S Proof coins can also be valuable, with a Proof 69 Deep Cameo selling for over $125.
  • Condition: Coins in better condition are generally worth more than those that are worn or damaged.
  • Mint mark: The mint mark on the coin indicates where it was produced. Coins from the Philadelphia mint have no mint mark, Denver coins have a “D” below the eagle, and San Francisco proof coins have an “S”. San Francisco minted coins are often more sought after and valuable.
  • Errors and varieties: Errors can significantly increase the value of a 1972 Kennedy half dollar. Notable errors include:

– No FG error: Some 1972-D coins are missing the designer’s initials “FG” on the reverse, which can make them quite valuable, ranging from $50 to over $300. One graded MS63 sold for over $2,400.
– Doubled Die Obverse (DDO): Coins with doubling on the front.
– Other errors: Off-center strikes, clipped planchets, and proof errors can also add value.

  • Consult resources like the [Greysheet] and [NGC Price Guide] for pricing information.
  • Professional grading by services like PCGS or NGC can increase market value, especially for high-grade or error coins.

In summary, while many 1972 Kennedy half dollars are worth face value, uncirculated coins, especially those with the “S” mint mark or errors like the “No FG” or “Doubled Die Obverse,” can be considerably more valuable.

Good point! According to the NGC Price Guide, as of August 2025, a Kennedy Half Dollar from 1972 in circulated condition is worth between $0.60 and $0.75. However, on the open market 1972 Half Dollars in pristine, uncirculated condition sell for as much as $1100.

Great question! And as you can see this coin. Is very bright very white looking. But that’s not always going to help you if a coin’s been in circulation a while it might be dirty. And it might have some corrosion.
