The value of a 1972 1 dollar coin depends on several factors, primarily its condition and where it was minted. Eisenhower dollars minted in 1972 can be found with and without mint marks . Mint marks are located on the obverse of the coin, just below the truncation of President Eisenhower’s portrait and above the date.

  • Circulated condition: Worth between $1.05 and $1.50 according to the NGC Price Guide. On the open market, these coins typically sell for $1.00 – $1.25.
  • Uncirculated condition (MS60-MS67): The value can range from $3 – $60, depending on the grade. Pristine, uncirculated coins can sell for as much as $2000.

  • Uncirculated condition (MS60-MS67): The value can range from $3 – $60, depending on the grade. Pristine, uncirculated coins can sell for as much as $7500. An example on eBay is priced at $1500.
  • Circulated condition: Worth between $12.50 and $13.75 according to the NGC Price Guide. On the open market, these coins typically sell for $1.50 – $2.00.
  • Uncirculated condition (MS60-MS67): The value can range from $10 – $200, depending on the grade. Pristine, uncirculated coins can sell for as much as $3000.
  • Proof condition: Proof Eisenhower dollars with the S mint mark were minted in silver and are highly collectible.

In addition to the above, some 1972 Eisenhower Dollars have variations or errors that can significantly increase their value. For example, the 1972 Type 2 reverse is considered rare and highly sought after. The easiest way to identify this coin is to look at the small image of the earth on the reverse. If the three islands below Florida are non-existent, it’s the rare Type 2 variety. In uncirculated condition, this variety can be worth considerably more. Additionally, error coins, such as double die obverse (DDO) and double die reverse (DDR) Eisenhower dollars, can be very valuable. A certified MS67 1972-S DDO/DDR Eisenhower Dollar is currently listed on eBay for $30,000.

Note: The values mentioned above are estimates and can fluctuate depending on market conditions and the specific characteristics of each coin. It’s always best to consult with a reputable coin dealer or numismatist for a precise appraisal.

Look for a Silver or Copper Stripe
If your Ike dollar has an “S” mint mark on the obverse, it is silver clad, or 40% silver. You can also check the edge of the coin for a silver stripe. If you find one, you most likely have a 40% silver, or silver clad Eisenhower dollar.

The amount of silver in these coins is so small that it’s nearly negligible. While the . 40 silver-clad coins are worth a bit of money for silver, most people who collect 1972 Silver Dollars buy the pieces based on their numismatic value alone.
