The value of a 1964 50-cent coin, also known as a Kennedy half dollar, varies based on its condition and any unique characteristics.

  • Silver Content: All 1964 Kennedy half dollars were minted with 90% silver, which makes them worth at least their melt value. As of August 12, 2025, the melt value for a 1964 Kennedy half dollar is $13.75, according to [NGC].
  • Circulation vs. Uncirculated: Coins that have been circulated and show signs of wear are generally less valuable than those in pristine, uncirculated condition.
  • Mint State (MS) Grade: Uncirculated coins are assigned a Mint State (MS) grade ranging from 60 to 70. Higher grades signify better condition and generally result in higher values.
  • Errors and Varieties: Certain errors and varieties can make a 1964 Kennedy half dollar more valuable to collectors.
  • Doubled Die Obverse (DDO): This error results in a doubled image on the coin’s obverse side.
  • Accented Hair: This variety features more defined hair details on President Kennedy’s portrait than later versions of the coin.
  • Special Mint Sets (SMS): The U.S. Mint produced a limited number of 1964 SMS Kennedy half dollars, characterized by a satin-like finish and sharp strike. These coins are extremely rare and valuable.
  • Circulated Condition: [1964 Kennedy Half Dollar] s in circulated condition are typically worth between $13.75 and $14.50.
  • Uncirculated Condition (MS60-MS67+): Values can range from $15 for lower MS grades up to $5,200 or more for higher grades. For example, [CoinWeek notes] that superb examples at MS67+ or higher can command premiums starting at about $3,000.
  • Error and Variety Coins:

– 1964-D Doubled Die Obverse: Auction prices for these coins typically range from $75 to $552, but an MS67 example sold for $2,000.
– Accented Hair Proof: In 2021, these coins sold at auction for between $94 and $4,551, with higher-grade examples fetching five-figure valuations. An MS68 example sold for $13,200 in 2019.
– 1964 SMS: These rare coins often break auction records, with a range between $6,037 and $151,000 in the past 10 years.

Keep in mind that these are approximate values, and the actual price can vary depending on the coin’s condition, the specific variety, and the current market demand. If you believe you have a valuable 1964 Kennedy half dollar, it’s recommended to have it professionally graded by a reputable service like NGC or PCGS.

Good point! 1964 SMS (Special Mint Set) Kennedy Half Dollar: The rarest variation is the SMS version, known for its sharp strike, satin finish, and careful handling during production. This version does not use the Accented Hair dies but an early version of the reverse die.
