The value of a 1949 German 10 Pfennig coin largely depends on its condition and the specific mint mark.

In circulated condition, the coin is generally not worth a significant amount. Prices can range from under $4 to around $15, [according to eBay listings] . Some coins might sell for $1.50 or $1.99, while others, depending on the mint mark and condition, could be listed slightly higher. For example, a 1949 D 10 Pfennig is listed for $1.50.

However, if the coin is in uncirculated condition and retains its original mint luster, its value can be considerably higher, potentially fetching a “decent sum”. One source mentions a range of $185,000 for an uncirculated 1949 10 Pfennig coin, but this is likely an outlier or refers to extremely rare proofs/variations. Another source indicates that an uncirculated 1949 D 10 Pfennig can be valued at $8.80, and a 1949 J small “J” can go for $24.

For example, on [Coinstrail] , the record price for a 1949 J “Bank deutscher Länder” steel coin (Hamburg Mint) was EUR 1,550 at auction in 2023. A similar coin with the F mint mark (Stuttgart Mint) fetched EUR 1,500 at auction in 2020.

  • Condition: Uncirculated coins with pristine surfaces and sharp details command higher prices.
  • Mint Mark: Coins minted in different cities (like Munich – D, Stuttgart – F, Karlsruhe – G, Hamburg – J) might have varying values based on their rarity or demand.
  • Rarity: While 1949 10 Pfennig coins had high mintages (e.g., 140,558,000 for the D mint mark and 154,095,000 for the J mint mark), certain variations or errors could be rarer and therefore more valuable.
  • Demand: The numismatic market is dynamic, and prices can fluctuate based on collector interest.

It is recommended to consult with reputable coin dealers or online resources specializing in coin valuation to get the most accurate assessment of your 1949 10 Pfennig coin’s value.

Good point! The Deutsche Bundesbank started issuing these 10 Deutsche Mark banknotes in 1949. They were withdrawn from circulation in 1960. This blue-colored German zehn deutsche mark banknote features three symbolic figures: a man, woman and Lady Justice. The banknote contains the words ‘Bank Deutscher Länder’.
