In 1940, during World War II, Nazi Germany minted coins as part of their Reichsmark currency system. These coins featured the Reichsadler (Imperial Eagle) with a swastika and were primarily made of zinc or aluminum due to wartime material shortages.

Here are some key denominations and their characteristics:

  • 1 Reichspfennig: Made entirely of zinc and featuring the Reichsadler with swastika on one side and the denomination and two oak leaves on the reverse.
  • 5 Reichspfennig: Also zinc, with the same obverse and reverse design elements as the 1 Reichspfennig.
  • 10 Reichspfennig: Similarly, this coin was made of zinc and featured the Reichsadler with swastika, the denomination, and two oak leaves.
  • 50 Reichspfennig: This denomination was made of aluminum and featured an eagle holding a swastika.

It’s important to note that the designs of these coins incorporated Nazi symbolism, including the swastika, according to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Some wartime issues, particularly military-related ones, might also have distinguishing features like holes in the center.

The value of these coins today can vary depending on their condition and rarity. While they are no longer legal tender, they are considered collectibles and hold historical significance. Dedicated collectors and history enthusiasts often seek them out for their connection to World War II and the Nazi era. For example, a 10 Reichspfennig coin from 1940 with a “J” mint mark (from Hamburg) has an estimated average price of 590 USD, based on auction sales.

Important Note: While collecting these coins is a recognized aspect of numismatics (coin collecting), it’s crucial to acknowledge the historical context and the atrocities committed by the Nazi regime during that period. Many museums and educational institutions use these coins to study the history of World War II and the Holocaust.

From my experience, The 1940 Wheat Penny value ranges from $4 to $11,000 depending on the coin condition, mintmark, and error involved. The 1940 wheat penny was struck at the facilities of Philadelphia (no mintmark), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S).

These coins are now valuable numismatic treasures. Perhaps due to their wide variety, historical provenance and high minting quality, coins of the German Empire are highly popular among collectors.

Value: Uncirculated pieces trade for $10–$50, while circulated examples are worth approximately $0.10–$1 only. Rare varieties with errors, though, may command higher prices ($100,000 or more).
