The value of an 1890 Morgan Silver Dollar varies significantly based on several key factors:

  • Mint Mark: Morgan Dollars were minted in Philadelphia (no mint mark), Carson City (CC), New Orleans (O), and San Francisco (S). The Carson City mint mark (‘CC’) is generally the most valuable due to lower mintage figures. For instance, an 1890-CC in circulated condition can start around $100 and reach as high as $420, while uncirculated examples can sell for up to $38500. Philadelphia minted the most coins, making them more common and generally less valuable than the other mints.
  • Condition (Grade): The better the condition of the coin (less wear and tear), the higher its value.

– Circulated coins: These coins show signs of wear and usually sell between $30 and $70, depending on the level of wear.
– Uncirculated coins: These coins are in mint state with no signs of wear. The value increases significantly with higher grades of uncirculated coins. For example, an 1890-S in MS60 (Mint State 60) might start at $100, while an MS67 could fetch five figures.

  • Silver Content: All 1890 Morgan Dollars are composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, containing 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver. This gives them an intrinsic value based on the current price of silver, regardless of their collector value.
  • Rarity and Demand: While the 1890 Philadelphia mint is fairly common, certain varieties and mint errors can increase the coin’s rarity and desirability among collectors, impacting its value significantly. For instance, some error varieties, such as misstrikes, can be worth up to $5,000, while minor flaws like die cracks may only add $50-$100 to the value.

  • 1890 (Philadelphia Mint): Circulated examples typically range from $30 to $60. Uncirculated examples (MS60) start around $75, and MS65 coins are valued between $200 and $300.
  • 1890-O (New Orleans Mint): Circulated coins are generally worth between $32 and $70. Uncirculated (MS60) start around $100-$115. MS65 examples can be less common due to strike issues and may reach $1,000 or more.
  • 1890-S (San Francisco Mint): Circulated examples typically fetch $30 to $90. Uncirculated (MS60) begin at $100, while higher grades like MS67 are rare and can command five figures at auction.
  • 1890-CC (Carson City Mint): This is the rarest and most valuable variation due to low mintage. Circulated examples are worth between $100 and $420, while uncirculated specimens (MS60) start around $1,050, and MS65 coins can be worth over $5,000.

Thanks for asking. It can be located on the back of the coin below the Eagle…the “S” mint mark is present above the letters “D” and “O” in the word “Dollar.” This 1890 San Francisco Mint Morgan dollar is ranked number 60 with a mintage of 8,230,373.

Thanks for asking. U.S. dollar coins worth money are hard to identify at a glance. Their value lies in where they were minted, their historical significance, mintage, precious metal content, whether they are error coins, and their condition.

The 1890 Morgan dollar was struck in 90% fine silver over 115 years ago at the main U.S. mint in Philadelphia – the birthplace of American coinage. The first U.S. coins were struck in Philadelphia in 1793 during the presidency of George Washington.
