The value of an 1889 Indian Head Penny can vary significantly based on its condition (grade), ranging from a few dollars for heavily circulated coins to thousands for those in pristine, uncirculated condition.

Here’s a general overview of the value based on condition:

  • Average circulated condition: An 1889 Indian Head Penny in average circulated condition is typically valued at around $3.
  • Good condition: About $3.
  • Fine condition: About $5.
  • Extremely Fine (XF) condition: About $18.
  • About Uncirculated (AU) condition: Around $75.
  • Uncirculated condition: An uncirculated 1889 Indian Head Penny can be valued at $30.

However, coins with the full original “Red” surface designation are scarce and command much higher prices, especially in higher grades. An 1889 Indian Head Penny graded at Mint State 66 red sold for over $13,000. A proof coin graded at proof 66 red sold for over $9,000.

It’s important to note that these are approximate values, and the actual price can be influenced by various factors, including:

  • Rarity: Coins with full red coloring or certain minting errors are more rare and valuable.
  • Specific grade: Professional grading by services like NGC or PCGS can significantly impact a coin’s value.
  • Buyer demand and market conditions: The demand for the coin can fluctuate and influence prices.

If you have an 1889 Indian Head Penny, especially one in excellent condition, it’s recommended to have it professionally graded to get a more accurate valuation. You can also consult online coin databases and price guides, [like the ones offered by NGC] and [PCGS].

Good point! Generally speaking, Indian Head Pennies from the 1880s are scarce and not so easy to come by. The 1889 edition is a bit of an exception due to the fact that an unusually large quantity of the coins have survived to today.

From my experience, The most valuable Indian Head Penny is the one that has a date of 1877. Nevertheless, they’re all valuable in their own right and any collector would be lucky to have one.
