The value of an 1850 gold dollar coin can vary significantly depending on its condition (grade), mint mark, and rarity.

  • Circulated Condition: According to the NGC Price Guide, as of August 2025, a Gold Dollar Coin from 1850 in circulated condition is worth between $210 and $435.
  • Pristine, Uncirculated Condition: In pristine, uncirculated condition, 1850 Gold Dollar Coins can sell for as much as $73500 on the open market.
  • 1850 (Philadelphia Mint – no mint mark): Mintage: 481,953. Values: $454.
  • 1850-C (Charlotte Mint): Mintage: 6,966. Values: $1,650. In circulated condition, values range from $600 to $6100, and uncirculated coins can reach $27750.
  • 1850-D (Dahlonega Mint): Mintage: 8,382. Values: $1,650. In circulated condition, values range from $425 to $6000, and uncirculated coins can reach $46000.
  • 1850-O (New Orleans Mint): Mintage: 14,000. Values: $649. In circulated condition, values range from $325 to $2000, and uncirculated coins can reach $17000.
  • Condition/Grade: Coins in higher grades (less wear, fewer imperfections) are significantly more valuable. A coin’s grade is scored from 1 to 70.
  • Mint Mark: As seen above, mint marks from the branch mints (C, D, O, S) are generally scarcer and more valuable than the Philadelphia mint (no mint mark).
  • Rarity: Lower mintage numbers generally equate to higher rarity and value. The 1850-C and 1850-D are particularly scarce in higher grades.
  • Strike Quality: Some mintages, especially from the branch mints like Charlotte (1850-C) and Dahlonega (1850-D), may exhibit weaker strikes, which can affect their value.
  • Surface Condition: The presence of marks, abrasions, or even hairline scratches can significantly impact the grade and value.
  • Provenance/Pedigree: Notable collections or historical ownership can add to a coin’s value.

Note: If considering a purchase, it’s essential to consult reputable coin dealers and sources like the NGC and PCGS price guides, which provide more detailed information on specific coins and recent auction results.
