Based on the provided information, a George Washington dollar coin, which is often referred to as a “gold dollar” because of its appearance but is not actually made of gold , has a value that varies depending on its condition and certain characteristics.

Here’s a breakdown of the value:

  • Standard 2007 issue: These coins, made of a copper core clad in manganese brass, are generally worth their face value of $1.
  • Uncirculated condition: If the coin is in uncirculated condition, its value might increase slightly, but likely not exceeding $4.
  • Missing Edge Lettering: A rare error variation from 2007, where the lettering on the coin’s edge is missing, can significantly increase its value, potentially reaching $20 to over $100.
  • Extra Fine Condition: Coins graded as extra fine, with minimal wear and excellent detail, can also fetch a premium price, with some sources mentioning figures around $30,000, though this is likely for highly sought-after examples with other notable features.

In summary, while the George Washington dollar coin is not made of gold, its value can go beyond its face value, especially for coins in exceptional condition or those with rare minting errors.

The standard value of George Washington dollar coin pieces is around $1–$8. Mint errors like missing or inverted edge lettering can raise that to $100–$350+.

2007 George Washington Dollar ( Missing Edge Lettering )
After the obverse and reverse of these dollars are struck, the coins are sent through a machine that applies the edge lettering. Somehow, a number of pieces missed the edge lettering step, and escaped the mint!

Great question! The most expensive Presidential Dollar coin is the 2009 SMS William Henry Harrison with missing edge lettering, graded 69/70, which can sell for up to $2,450. The least expensive among the top valuable coins is the 2007 SMS Jefferson dollar with missing edge lettering, graded 67, valued at $600.

From my experience, The George Washington $1 coin was first available to the public on February 15, 2007, in honor of Washington’s Birthday, which was observed on February 19. This marked the first time since the St. Gaudens Double Eagle (1907–1933) that the United States had issued a coin with edge lettering for circulation.
