James K. Polk Presidential Dollars, minted in 2009, are worth more than their face value of $1, especially if they are in uncirculated condition or have mint errors. Their value depends on several factors:

  • Condition (Grade): Coins are graded on a scale of 1 to 70. Higher grades, particularly those in mint condition (Uncirculated or Proof), fetch higher prices.
  • Mint Mark: The coins were minted in Philadelphia (P), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S, for proofs). The mint mark is found on the edge of the coin.
  • Errors: Errors can significantly increase the value of a coin. Some common errors found on Presidential Dollars include:

– Missing Edge Lettering: This error is where the motto “E Pluribus Unum”, the mint mark, and the date are missing from the edge of the coin.
– Doubled Edge Lettering: The edge lettering may appear doubled or inverted if the coin goes through the incusing machine twice.
– Struck on Wrong Planchet: In some cases, a dollar coin may have been accidentally struck on a blank planchet intended for a different denomination.

Here’s an overview of the potential values:

  • Circulated Coins: If the coin is circulated (worn from everyday use), it will likely only be worth its face value of $1.
  • Uncirculated Coins: Uncirculated James K. Polk Presidential Dollars can be worth slightly more, with values ranging from approximately $2.10 to $6.25.
  • Proof Coins: Proof coins, which have a higher quality finish, can also be worth a few dollars more than face value.
  • Error Coins: Error coins, especially those with missing or doubled edge lettering, can be quite valuable. Some examples have sold for hundreds or even thousands of dollars, depending on the error and the coin’s condition.
  • A 2009 James Polk Presidential Dollar with missing edge lettering graded MS66 by PCGS has been offered for $299.
  • An MS66-graded coin missing edge lettering was offered on Mercari for $114.03.
  • In 2014, a 2009 P James K. Polk dollar graded MS67 by PCGS sold for $4,313.
  • Consult a Coin Grader: For an accurate valuation, it’s best to have your coin professionally graded by a reputable third-party grading service like PCGS or NGC.
  • Check Auction Records: Websites like eBay and Heritage Auctions can provide information on recent sales of similar coins, giving you an idea of current market value.
  • Look for Errors: Examine the edge of the coin carefully for missing or doubled lettering, [as described by Littleton Coin Company].

In conclusion, while most James K. Polk Presidential Dollars are only worth their face value, some can be valuable collector’s items, especially those in mint condition or with rare errors.

I can help with that. Polk, who served from 1845 to 1849. As a special issue coin, the 2009 P James K. Polk dollar coin was issued in limited quantities and is considered a collectible item by numismatists and coin collectors. It, indeed, is a rare find.

From my experience, The Presidential dollar coin features one of the boldest and most beautiful coins ever created by the United States Mint. The traditional inscriptions “E Pluribus Unum,” the date of issuance and the mint mark have been moved to the edge of the coin, making it unique among circulating coins.
